Kata

TEAM SKIF demonstrating infront of shihan Mohan Hira (8 Dan) empi kata and  bunkai 2012
Kata also called forms (in English) are a series of related Karate techniques done in sequence; are a series of defending and attacking movements performed against imaginary opponents in a set pattern. The number of moves in Kata/forms range mostly from 20 to about 60. Some have more than a hundred moves. There are over 100 different katas practiced across all Karate styles. Through the practice of kata/forms, students (karateka) learn the application of various Karate techniques.
EMPI Bunkai

Originally kata was the only way Karate techniques were practiced. Karate bunkai was emphasized as application not presentation. Karate basics (kihon) and sparring (kumite) exercises came much later. The Karate techniques practiced in kata are highly applicable in kumite and other self-defense situations. They train you to respond to situations naturally and freely. Kata serve a multi-dimensional purpose, aiding in the development of coordination, balance, timing, breath control and rhythm.

Shotokan karate has 26 standard katas, that is also the same in SKIF (Kanazawa-ryu) but with addition of some few katas
